THE DIALECTICS OF AFRICAN MIGRATION IN A GLOBALISED WORLD
This paper interrogates the multidimensional impacts of African migration on both origin and destination states, positing that migration constitutes both a developmental paradox and a structural challenge. While remittance inflows significantly contribute to household welfare and national economies which is exemplified by Nigeria’s position as a leading recipient in sub-Saharan Africa, the concomitant outflow of skilled labour has precipitated critical shortages in healthcare, education, and governance sectors. The study further argues that receiving countries benefit disproportionately from African migrants’ labour and cultural capital, particularly in contexts of demographic decline and labour deficits, yet migrants most often than not face systemic discrimination and policy marginalisation. Politically, migration has reshaped domestic discourses and foreign policy in both Africa and Europe, reinforcing securitised approaches to mobility governance. Drawing on qualitative method of research, the paper concludes by advocating for regionally coordinated and ethically grounded migration frameworks that mitigate labour loss, uphold migrants’ rights, and integrate migration into sustainable development planning.
