Analyzing the Evolution of the Customer Journey Before and After the Rise of the Internet

Abstract The essay examines how the consumer journey of awareness to loyalty has been altered in both pre- and post-internet eras. Traditional thinking holds that the customer journey, through mass media, word-of-mouth, and in-store touchpoints, moved lineally through awareness, familiarity, consideration, purchase, and then loyalty. This frame was disrupted with new touchpoints coming in because of digital transformation, including social media, websites, online reviews, chatbots, and e-commerce sites. Referencing academic literature and course materials, an analysis is presented of how each phase of awareness, familiarity, consideration, purchase, and loyalty has changed in the light of a digital environment. This confirm how online visibility, user content, and data-driven personalization have managed to reshape consumer behavior and make the journey more interactive, and multichannel. It concludes by emphasizing that businesses must adopt holistic digital strategies if they are to enhance customer experiences and remain competitive within a market where customers are becoming increasingly better connected.
