CULTURAL NORMS AND CHILDCARE PRACTICES IN SELECTED LOW-INCOME URBAN COMMUNITIES IN ALIMOSHO LGA, LAGOS STATE, NIGERIA.
This thesis investigates how cultural beliefs, social norms, and socioeconomic realities shape childcare practices for infants and young children in low-income urban communities in Alimosho, Lagos, Nigeria. Using a mixed-methods design including surveys, interviews, focus group discussions, and observational tools, the study explores both paid home-based and informally run childcare settings. The study highlights the need for culturally sensitive ECD interventions, targeted caregiver training, and policy recognition of informal childcare providers. Improving childcare quality in low-income settings can strengthen children’s development and support women’s ability to work.
