Refractory High Entropy Alloys (RHEAs)

The aerospace sector is constantly looking for innovative materials that can survive harsh conditions like high temperatures. Due to their outstanding mechanical properties under such conditions, the introduction of Refractory High- Entropy Alloys (RHEAs) is gaining prominence in this pursuit. To create alloys with improved mechanical, chemical, and oxidation resistance properties, this project is devoted to the advancement of RHEAs for high-temperature aerospace applications. We have created a multi-principal alloy using refractory elements like as Ti, Zr, Nb, Mo, and Ta. Different alloy compositions have been cast with Vacuum arc melting. The study investigated the oxidation behaviour of the Nb- Ta-Ti-Zr-Mo alloy, focusing on variations in Zr and Ti compositions and their impact on oxidation behaviour. Isothermal oxidation experiments were conducted at 400°C, and the analysis encompassed changes in weight, oxidation mechanisms, and the characterization of oxide formation at various time intervals. The tensile tests were conducted and results of the stress strain graph for the tensile test for Ti-6Al-4V we found that the results align accurately with previous results and the new fixture used for the tensile test works well.

Abstract

The aerospace sector is constantly looking for innovative materials that can survive harsh conditions like high temperatures. Due to their outstanding mechanical properties under such conditions, the introduction of Refractory High- Entropy Alloys (RHEAs) is gaining prominence in this pursuit.
