Pi Controller Bidirectional Charger Design For Lithium-Ion Battery
This project aims to design a PI (Proportional-Integral) controller-based bidirectional charger for lithium-ion batteries, enhancing charging efficiency and battery safety. The system employs a bidirectional buck-boost converter to regulate power flow between the source and the battery, with the PI controller managing voltage, current, and state of charge (SOC%). Simulations were conducted using MATLAB Simulink to model the system and evaluate its performance. The simulation results demonstrated that the system successfully maintained the battery voltage at 12.88 V with minimal fluctuation in State of Charge (SOC) percentage. The PI controller reduced the in-rush current by 98.2% (from 174.3 A to 3.2 A) and stabilized the charging current, maintaining a range of −1.99 A to −1.6 A, ensuring safe transitions between charging and discharging modes. Dynamic response analysis confirmed seamless mode switching from discharge to charge at t = 3s. Despite the promising results, challenges such as optimizing the PI parameter and integrating it with photovoltaic (PV) panels for renewable energy applications require further investigation. This project lays the groundwork for developing more efficient and sustainable battery management systems, particularly for electric vehicles and renewable energy storage applications.
