Optimizing Fire-Resistant Concrete with Forta, Polyester, and Microsilica via Taguchi Design
This study investigates the effect of additives on the thermal durability of concrete, a crucial factor in ensuring structural integrity in high-temperature environments. The research focuses on the effects of Forta fibers, polyester fibers, and microsilica on the performance of C25 and C30 concrete (denoting compressive strengths of 25-30 MPa). Utilizing a Taguchi experimental design, 16 distinct concrete mixtures were subjected to testing at temperatures of 400°C, 600°C, and 800 °C. The materials' compressive, tensile, and flexural strengths were carefully measured after the thermal shock. Statistical analysis of the data revealed that adding Forta fibers significantly improved the mechanical properties of the concrete (50-63%), while microsilica enhanced its thermal durability (26-44%). An optimized mixture, composed of 1.5% Forta fibers, 1 kg/m³ of polyester fibers, and 0.05% microsilica, notably reduced the loss of compressive (30%) and tensile (25%) strength observed at 800 °C, when compared to control samples. This is attributed to microsilica increasing heat resistance by creating a denser structure, and Forta fibers limiting cracking. This research presents a practical and cost-effective approach to designing concrete with enhanced fire resistance, a crucial factor in maintaining structural integrity.
