ANALYSIS OF THE IMPACT OF URBAN EXPANSION ON LAND USE/COVER CHANGES IN ABEOKUTA, NIGERIA
Rapid growth of Southwestern Nigeria cities, including Abeokuta, has led to significant land use/land cover changes, posing environmental challenges and impacting sustainable development. This study analyzed the dynamics of urban expansion and land use/land cover changes in Abeokuta, Nigeria, between 1972 and 2022, and explored its implications for sustainable built environments. Using Remote Sensing and Geographic Information System techniques (GIS), satellite images of Abeokuta sourced from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) portal at six time points over five decades (1972, 1984, 1992, 2002, 2013, and 2022) were processed and analyzed using ArcGIS 10.5 and IDRISI Selva Version 17.0 to detect the changes in the land use/land cover of Abeokuta. The study revealed a significant increase in built-up areas, from 5.73km2 (0.66%) in 1972 to 94.74km2 (10.93%) by 2022 and a corresponding decrease in vegetation cover, from 93.66% to 58.8%. The expansion of built-up areas has led to increased impervious surfaces, loss of biodiversity, and increased risk of flooding. The findings called for effective urban planning and management strategies to mitigate the adverse environmental impacts of urbanization. To this extent the study recommended the adoption of sustainable land use practices, green infrastructure, and urban design principles that prioritize environmental sustainability. This study provides valuable insights for policymakers, urban planners, and stakeholders seeking to promote sustainable built environments in Abeokuta and similar cities in Nigeria.
