Gosikhurd Dam Project: Delay, Displacement, and the Socio-Economic Condition of Project-Affected People (PAPs) in Vidarbha, Maharashtra

The Gosikhurd Dam Project, initiated in 1978 and inaugurated in 1988, was designed to bring large-scale irrigation, drinking water, and economic development to Vidarbha, but decades of delays, poor rehabilitation planning, and inadequate compensation have caused major suffering for thousands of displaced families. Although over ₹13,600 crore has been spent, canal networks and full water delivery remain incomplete, leaving project-affected people without land, stable livelihoods, or basic facilities in resettlement villages. Unemployment has increased sharply, social structures have weakened, and most PAPs struggle with economic insecurity and inadequate government support. The project highlights serious gaps in planning, R&R implementation, and accountability, making urgent government action essential to restore justice and complete the project effectively.
