Fabrication of a Novel Semi-Translucent BIPV Module Providing High Power Density and Active Daylight Management
Building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) provides a sustainable method for solar energy generation without requiring additional productive land. However, conventional semi-transparent modules often suffer from low efficiency and visual discomfort. This work presents a novel BIPV solution using micro-concentrator photovoltaics (micro-CPV) with integrated solar tracking to improve both energy output and daylight quality. The system features a glass front layer embedded with linear asymmetric Fresnel lenses and a transparent backplane with solar cell strips. It blocks direct sunlight, converting it into electricity, while allowing diffuse light to pass through, producing soft, glare-free interior lighting. A micro-tracking mechanism adjusts the solar cells to follow the sun’s path, enhancing light capture throughout the day. Designed for translucent applications such as skylights or non-view façades, the module also reduces heat gain indoors. Lens arrays of 5 lenses of 2.25 × 10 cm fabricated by roll-to-plate UV imprinting on solar glass show a peak optical efficiency of 80%, remaining above 70% up to a 60° angle of incidence. Outdoor tests confirm improved visual comfort, with a reduction in an order of magnitude in the peak illuminance point, an average of 1500 lx, and a peak-to-average ratio lowered by 7 points, demonstrating the module’s potential for both energy and daylighting management.
