Is Your Leader a Narcissist? The Psychological Traits Defining Current Affairs
This critical analysis explores the psychological phenomenon of narcissism as it manifests within modern political leadership and the electorate. Drawing upon concepts from psychological studies, it moves beyond simple caricature to define and dissect the two-sided nature of the narcissistic leader (initially charismatic and visionary, yet often later self-serving and exploitative). The article analyzes how contemporary political environments, particularly the rise of social media and affective polarisation (emotional division), create a fertile ground for narcissistic leaders to emerge and exert disproportionate influence. It will also critically examine the impact of this leadership style on democratic institutions, social cohesion, and the psychological well-being of the collective.
