Post-Retrofit Moisture Risk in Solid-Wall Buildings: A Case-Based Study of Birmingham Homes
This technical report explores the challenges and risks associated with retrofitting solid-wall dwellings in the UK, focusing particularly on moisture-related failures. Drawing on field case studies from Birmingham (Handsworth, Edgbaston, Smethwick), it examines real-world detailing issues, including thermal bridging, interstitial condensation, and vapour control. The article discusses best practice approaches aligned with PAS 2035 and highlights the importance of hygrothermal modelling (e.g. WUFI), RH sensor monitoring, and post-retrofit evaluation. Designed for retrofit professionals, building scientists, students, and policy-makers, this report offers evidence-based insights for safer and more resilient retrofit delivery.
