GEOSPATIAL ANALYSIS OF THE TREND AND PATTERN OF VEHICULAR ROAD CRASHES ON THE KADUNA-ABUJA EXPRESSWAY, NIGERIA

This study focused on geospatial analysis of the pattern of road traffic crashes on the Kaduna-Abuja Expressway in Nigeria, a vital transportation corridor experiencing frequent accidents. Recognizing the significance of public health and socio-economic impacts of road traffic crashes, the study aimed to identify crash hotspots, analyze temporal and spatial trends, and examine contributory factors. Utilizing a quantitative research design, secondary data from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) covering 2022–2024 were analyzed. Descriptive statistics summarized crash characteristics, revealing a total of 1,037 crashes over three years, with an average of 346 crashes annually. Spatial mapping identified 18 black spots along the 167 km route, with crash densities of 9.2 per black spot each year, and the highest incident zone recorded 10 crashes at Black Gold in 2024. The study revealed that crash occurrences are more frequent during daytime, especially mornings, and peaks occur in festive months like October to December. Regression analysis indicated that speeding, poor road conditions, and adverse weather significantly contribute to crash frequency. Night crashes, drivers’ recklessness, and infrastructural deficiencies such as inadequate signage and maintenance heavily influence crash severity. The findings highlight the importance of integrating geospatial analysis with infrastructural and behavioral strategies for effective road safety management. The study concluded that targeted infrastructural improvements, enforcement of traffic regulations, and awareness campaigns for drivers are vital for reducing crash rates. Implementing these measures could significantly enhance road safety and reduce fatalities along this vital corridor. The findings highlight the importance of integrating geospatial analysis with infrastructural and behavioral strategies for effective road safety management.
