Photovoltaic Integration in Football Stadiums: Global Trends, Regional Disparities, Future Potential

Football stadiums are both major energy consumers and highly visible infrastructures, making them ideal showcase projects for renewable energies and, particularly, photovoltaics (PV). This study systematically evaluates the use of PV systems in professional football stadiums worldwide. A comprehensive overview is provided for Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, while highlights from other regions and countries illustrate global developments. The results show clear regional differences: Germany and Switzerland lead the way with widespread adoption, Brazil shows a tournament-driven catalyst effect, while major leagues such as Serie A, La Liga and the Premier League lag behind. Political measures, and to some extent major tournaments, proved to be the most important driving forces. Future developments are likely to combine PV with efficiency, storage and smart energy concepts, while falling costs and upcoming international tournaments (e.g. the 2030 FIFA World Cup) could promote further adoption.
