Applications of GIS for Road Network Analysis to Mitigate Traffic Congestion in Colombo Suburbs
Traffic congestion poses critical challenges to urban mobility, productivity, and environmental quality. This study analyzes the spatial and temporal variability of traffic congestion in the Mirihana Police Division using GIS-based modelling techniques such as Inverse Distance Weighting (IDW) spatial analysis, hotspot detection, network analysis, and buffer evaluation. Covering the period from 2018–2022, the research identifies major congestion hotspots, reveals influencing factors including land-use intensity and proximity to key services, and proposes alternative routes for mitigating congestion. Findings highlight the value of GIS as a strategic tool for traffic management and urban planning in fast-growing suburban contexts.
