A Case Study: Quantifying the Impact of Minor Design Changes on Large-Scale Solar PV Plants
Utility-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) plants continue to expand globally, with overall performance depending not only on module and inverter technologies but also on early-stage design choices such as equipment placement and cable configuration. This paper highlights the specific impact of minor changes in layout design and equipment placement on the direct current (DC) cable network, as well as the resulting effects on capital expenditure, power loss, and energy yield. A base case scenario PV plant is defined, and nine design variations are assessed. Results indicate that the positioning of combiner boxes and inverters has the strongest influence on both cable costs and associated power losses. The study demonstrates that relatively minor adjustments to equipment layout and other key design decisions can result in significant reductions in costs without compromising energy yield. These findings underline the importance of layout-driven design decisions during early project stages and provide practical guidance for developers seeking cost-effective PV plant development.
