The Role of Preventive Medicine in Reducing Healthcare Costs: A Literature Review

Background: Global healthcare expenditures continue to rise, driven largely by the burden of chronic and preventable diseases. Preventive medicine (encompassing primordial, primary, secondary, tertiary, and quaternary prevention) offers a cost-effective strategy to mitigate these expenses through proactive health promotion and disease prevention. Objective: This review examines the economic impact of preventive medicine, highlighting its role in reducing healthcare costs, the mechanisms underlying these savings, and the barriers to its implementation. Methods: A narrative literature review was conducted, synthesizing data from international studies, public health reports, and policy analyses to evaluate the relationship between preventive interventions and healthcare expenditure. Results: Evidence demonstrates that preventive strategies such as vaccination, lifestyle modification, and early disease screening significantly lower healthcare costs by reducing the incidence and severity of chronic diseases, minimizing hospitalizations, and improving population productivity. Despite these benefits, challenges such as limited funding, inadequate policy prioritization, and socio-cultural barriers hinder widespread adoption, especially in low-resource settings. Conclusion: Preventive medicine represents a sustainable approach to healthcare cost reduction. Strengthening policy frameworks, increasing public health funding, and integrating preventive care into routine clinical practice are essential to maximizing its economic and population health benefits. Future research should focus on cost-benefit analyses, innovative preventive technologies, and context-specific strategies to overcome implementation barriers. Keywords: Preventive medicine, healthcare costs, cost-effectiveness, public health policy, chronic disease prevention.
