BRAND ACCOUNTING AND SUSTAINABILITY OF LISTED MANUFACTURING FIRMS IN NIGERIA
The purpose of this study was to examine how brand accounting affects Nigerian manufacturing companies’ sustainability performance, focusing on the social, environmental, and economic facets. In particular, it ascertains how companies value their brands as intangible assets in accordance with IAS 38, tests the efficacy of brand valuation strategies, and analyses how brands are valued in financial reporting. The study, which covers 21 manufacturing firms between 2015and 2024, addresses endogeneity and firm specific effects by employing the Panel Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) with first-differenced transformation. The results reveal that brand equity significantly enhance sustainability performance, while brand valuation and brand asset capitalization do not yield meaningful improvements unless supported by transparency. It was concluded from the findings of this study that; sustainability is best supported by transparent and standardized brand accounting practices rather than mere recognition or capitalization. The researcher recommended that, policymakers and regulatory authorities should strengthen IAS 38 enforcement, develop industry-specific brand disclosure guidelines, and integrate sustainability metrics into financial reporting frameworks to promote responsible business practices in Nigeria’s manufacturing sector
