Heteropaternal Superfecundation: A Rare Genetic and Reproductive Phenomenon
A remarkable reproductive occurrence known as heteropaternal superfecundation (HSF) occurs when two eggs produced during a single ovulatory cycle are fertilized by sperm from two distinct men. Although biologically plausible, it remains a rarely detected phenomenon, mostly discovered through DNA profiling during paternity disputes or genetic investigations. This article discusses biological mechanisms, epidemiological findings, genetic and diagnostic aspects, clinical implications, and ethical considerations of heteropaternal superfecundation. Awareness among clinicians and nursing professionals is crucial for appropriate management and sensitive handling of such cases.
