Medical Education in the Era of Virtual Reality: Pathology in Focus

Digital technologies are reshaping medical education, with Virtual Reality (VR) emerging as a transformative tool for training healthcare professionals. In pathology, a discipline requiring mastery of both gross and microscopic processes, traditional methods such as lectures, cadaver dissections, and light microscopy, though foundational, face limitations of accessibility, static resources, and variable quality. VR addresses these challenges by offering immersive, interactive, and dynamic learning environments that enhance engagement, knowledge retention, and practical skills. Evidence from case studies highlights VR’s effectiveness in improving comprehension of complex disease mechanisms, fostering critical thinking, and enabling global collaboration. Despite these benefits, high costs, technical demands, pedagogical integration, and ethical concerns remain barriers to widespread adoption. Future directions include the incorporation of Mixed Reality (MR) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to deliver personalized and adaptive learning. VR thus represents a paradigm shift in pathology education, bridging theory and practice and improving clinical preparedness and patient care outcomes.
