Mapping Biopesticide Research in Morocco through scientometric analysis
The persistent threat of pests and diseases continues compromising crop yields and reducing food quality, posing a major challenge to the resilience of agricultural systems. Amid growing concerns associated with synthetic agrochemicals, the development of natural alternatives for plant protection has become a critical priority. In this context, biopesticides have emerged as a promising solution for sustainable pest and disease management. While their adoption varies across countries, research on biological control is crucial for driving the expansion of the biopesticide market. This study employs scientometric tools to evaluate trends in biopesticide research in Morocco. The findings reveal significant growth in biopesticide research in Morocco from 1989 to 2024, with an average annual increase of 9.09% in publications. Notably, the last five years witnessed a remarkable acceleration, with a 28.47% annual growth rate. Moroccan research has evolved from foundational studies on microbial agents to practical applications in horticulture and citrus production. International collaborations, particularly with France, Spain, Turkey, and the USA, have significantly advanced the field through knowledge exchange and technology transfer. Key institutions such as INRA and Cadi Ayyad University have played a central role in advancing research output, with findings increasingly published in high-impact, interdisciplinary journals. Despite these advances, further progress will require investment in scientific capacity, supportive policies, and sustained international partnerships. With these efforts, Morocco has the potential to enhance food security, strengthen its competitive position in international markets, and make significant contributions to sustainable agriculture worldwide.
