Enhancing Vehicle Perception in Autonomous Vehicles Using Multi-Modal AI: Integrating Camera, LiDAR, and Sensor Data

Autonomous vehicles rely heavily on the planning and control system through perception tasks to safely navigate complex environments. The current state of perception systems is struggling to overcome the restrictions of individual sensors, like a camera or a LIDAR, in achieving accurate interpretations of surroundings. This paper presents a novel multimodal AI approach to enhance vehicle perception by combining data from cameras, LiDAR, and other relevant sensors. The proposed advancement develops a perception system built upon the best available advanced deep learning techniques and data fusion strategies to furnish a comprehensive understanding of the environment, hence improving accuracy and reliability. Key Findings Experimental results demonstrate large improvements in the accuracy and robustness of perception compared with state-of-the-art methods, especially under difficult perception scenes where visibility is low or environments are highly dynamic. The results suggest that multimodal AI could be the key to significant, state-of-the-art improvements in autonomous vehicles - one that would realize ever-safer and truly reliable autonomous driving.
