Control Strategy Evaluation for UPQC-Based Power Quality Enhancement
In recent years, maintaining high power quality has become a major concern due to the increased use of nonlinear loads and sensitive equipment. A Unified Power Quality Conditioner (UPQC) is a reliable solution used to address both voltage and current-related power quality problems at the same time. This paper presents a comparative study of three control strategies Unit Vector Template (UVT), Instantaneous p-q (PQ) Theory, and Synchronous Reference Frame (SRF) Theory for UPQC to enhance power quality. The effectiveness of each method is evaluated based on their ability to mitigate voltage sag, voltage swell, and current harmonics. MATLAB/Simulink simulations are conducted for each technique, and their performance is compared in terms of Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) reduction and dynamic response. The results demonstrate that while all three methods improve power quality, the SRF-based control strategy achieves superior performance in harmonic mitigation and voltage regulation. This study provides valuable insights into selecting the most suitable control technique for UPQC applications in modern power distribution systems.
