Dynamic Analysis and Control of Torsional Vibrations in Geared Transmission Systems

Torsional vibration is a critical concern in geared transmission systems, significantly influencing the performance, durability, and noise generation of mechanical powertrains. This paper presents a comprehensive study of the dynamic behavior of geared systems subjected to torsional excitations under varying load and speed conditions. A lumped parameter model incorporating gear mesh stiffness, backlash, and damping is developed to simulate the torsional response. The nonlinear nature of gear interactions is also considered to better reflect real-world operational scenarios. Modal analysis and time-domain simulations are performed to investigate resonance frequencies, mode shapes, and vibration amplitudes. The study further explores the effect of damping mechanisms and gear geometry on torsional stability. Experimental validation using a test rig confirms the accuracy of the developed model. The paper concludes with recommendations for vibration suppression techniques, including tuned vibration absorbers and active control strategies, enhancing the reliability of geared systems in automotive, aerospace, and industrial applications. This study focuses on the dynamic analysis and control of torsional vibrations in geared transmission systems to enhance performance and durability. A detailed mathematical model is developed to evaluate vibration characteristics under varying load and speed conditions. The effects of gear stiffness, damping, and backlash on torsional response are investigated. Active and passive control strategies are implemented to minimize vibration amplitudes. Results demonstrate improved system stability, reduced resonance effects, and extended component lifespan.
