La Salaire De La Peur & Its Remakes: An Endless Circle Of Unsuccess

This article investigates Georges Arnaud’s Le Salaire de la Peur and its four cinematic adaptations, spanning from Henri-Georges Clouzot’s Palme d’Or-winning 1953 film to Julien Leclercq’s 2024 Netflix production. By tracing the evolution of these adaptations—Violent Road (1958), Sorcerer (1977), and the latest remake—the study explores the cultural and industrial dialogues between French and American cinema, particularly the recurring tensions between artistic expression and commercial imperatives.

Clouzot’s original adaptation, with its anti-American undertones and refusal of Hollywood-style closure, is contrasted with the American remakes, which emphasize heroism, nationalism, and marketability. The 2024 remake marks a further departure, reflecting Netflix’s globalized production logic and a diminished Franco-American cinematic exchange.

Ultimately, the paper argues that the trajectory of these remakes illustrates how a narrative once infused with existential and political weight has been progressively reduced to formulaic spectacle, revealing both the cultural stakes and the pitfalls of transnational remaking practices.
