Parenting Matters: The Continuous Impact of Parenting on Children's Mental Health, Confidence, and Lifelong Development

Parenting plays a foundational role in shaping a child’s mental health, emotional resilience, confidence, and personality. This review paper examines how parenting continues to influence children beyond early childhood, with a focus on adolescents. A secondary research methodology was conducted using peerreviewed journals and global reports, supplemented with a simulated dataset of 250 Indian students. Findings show that authoritative parenting promotes positive mental health, high confidence, and strong socio-emotional development. However, authoritarian and neglectful parenting are strongly associated with anxiety, stress, fear of failure, and poor self-esteem. The study compared parenting outcomes in India with those in Finland, Japan, and the USA, emphasizing the superiority of emotional support and autonomy-based parenting. The paper concludes that increasing parent awareness and mental health literacy in India is essential for improving youth wellbeing.
