D5.7 Best practice in methods of citizen engagement and knowledge transfer: Citizen Assemblies, workshops, and surveys
This report explores the critical role of citizen engagement in marine research and governance amid the escalating climate crisis. Anchored in the Mission Ocean Implementation Plan, it emphasizes a whole-of-society approach to improving ocean health through co-designed and co-created solutions. Drawing on foundational concepts in deliberative and participatory democracy, the report analyzes four citizen engagement methods—Citizen Assemblies, Workshops, Attitudinal Surveys, and Citizen Science Surveys—highlighting their benefits, challenges, and best practices. Key recommendations include aligning local efforts with national strategies, building flexibility into engagement design, ensuring follow-up with participants, and planning for reflective and impact evaluations.
