Partial Replacement of Fine Aggregate by Using Glass Powder in High Strength Concrete

The growth of the construction industry at a rapid rate has resulted in an increased requirement for natural aggregates, and hence the riverbeds are deteriorating, and the environment is getting unbalanced. The careless dumping of glass waste not only takes up precious space in landfills but also presents a risk because the material is non-biodegradable. Friendly approach for producing high-performance concrete and reducing the burden of waste glass disposal. In order to counteract these issues, this study aims to explore the possible use of waste glass powder to substitute fine aggregate partially in high-strength concrete manufacture.10% of partial substitution of fine aggregate with weight of glass powder was performed in this experimental work. To enhance workability and performance of the concrete, a polycarboxylate ether (PCE)-type superplasticizer was used in the form of a chemical admixture, and silica fume was used as a mineral admixture to improve microstructure and mechanical strength of the mix. The compressive strength, split tensile strength, and flexural strength of the concrete at various curing ages were tested. The results indicated that partial replacement of glass powder to a desired percentage improved the strength and durability characteristics of high-strength concrete due to the pozzolanic activity of fine glass particles and combined action of silica fume. At this excess limit, there was a loss of strength due to the excessive content of glass, which formed weak interfacial bond. This study confirms that partial substitution of fine aggregate with waste glass powder, in combination with PCE-based superplasticizer, is a low-cost, sustainable, and environmentally friendly approach for producing high-performance concrete and reducing the burden of waste glass disposal.
