(Re)thinking procedural justice in private security interventions
While procedural justice has long been recognised as a key determinant of citizen legitimacy in public policing, its application to citizen encounters with private security guards remains underexplored. This presentation shows the results of a scoping review identifying and mapping the available evidence toward a better understanding of the role of procedural justice in private security. In particular, it involves two research questions: How is procedural justice conceptualised and defined in empirical studies focusing on citizen experiences with private security guards? How is procedural justice operationalised and measured in these studies? The presentation concludes with future research directions, inviting researchers to rethink the boundaries of procedural justice beyond traditional policing.
