Bertram of Metz and John of Alta Silva

Abstract In Dolopathos, a medieval Latin frame tale in the Book of Sindibad / Seven Sages of Rome tradition, the author John of Alta Silva uniquely and prominently incorporates the theme of law and justice to appeal specifically to his dedicatee, the legal scholar Bishop Bertram of Metz. In addition, the content of one of the frame tale’s internal stories (Polyphemus) suggests that the terminus ante quem for John’s dedication of the book to the bishop is not 1212 but 1203.
