Assessing the Performance of Green Alley Programs for Sustainable Urban Development from the Perspective of a Developing Country

Alleys are an essential component of an urban area. However, rapid urbanization, outdated infrastructure, and environmental pressures have deteriorated living conditions in alleys. Therefore, green alley programs have emerged as a sustainable solution, aiming to enhance urban resilience, improve environmental quality, and promote economic and social well-being. Although numerous efforts have been implemented to foster green alley initiatives, there is still a lack of studies that holistically examine the performance of these programs. This study uses the fuzzy synthetic evaluation method to investigate the sustainability performance of Vietnam’s green alley programs in economic, social, and environmental aspects. The findings show a high sustainability performance of green alley initiatives in Vietnam, with an overall performance score of 4.10. The economic group has the highest performance value, followed by social and environmental dimensions. The findings underscore the crucial role of green alley programs in improving urban infrastructure, fostering community cohesion, and mitigating climate risks. This study provides practical insights for policymakers and urban planners to prioritize green alley development and offers a comprehensive framework for evaluating sustainability.
