AI-Driven Chatbots in Academic Libraries: Improving Reference Services and User Engagement

This conceptual research poster examines how artificial-intelligence-driven chatbots are transforming reference services and user engagement in academic libraries. Drawing upon an extensive literature review and the researcher’s professional experience, the study identifies current applications, best practices, challenges, and future directions for AI integration in library environments. Findings indicate that chatbots enhance accessibility, extend service hours, and support personalized interactions, while allowing librarians to focus on higher-level information support. The research also highlights challenges such as data privacy, AI bias, and system compatibility. Overall, the study concludes that AI-powered chatbots can significantly improve efficiency and user experience when implemented responsibly alongside human librarians.
