Empowering Immigrants for Development: A Strategic Framework for Harnessing Migrant Contribution to Global Economic, Social, Cultural and Knowledge Transfer
This article explores the multifaceted role of immigrants as agents of development, highlighting their contributions to economic growth, social infrastructure, cultural enrichment, and knowledge transfer in both host and origin countries. It argues that inclusive policies and integration systems in host nations maximize these benefits, enabling immigrants to impact labour markets, education, healthcare, innovation, remittances, and diaspora-led business linkages. Conversely, restrictive migration regimes hinder potential development gains. The paper proposes a strategic framework emphasizing policy coherence, institutional support, dual-benefit linkages, and governance mechanisms to optimize immigrant contributions, while identifying research gaps and providing policy recommendations for achieving inclusive and sustainable global development through migration.
