Neurosina: A Conceptual Synthesis Mapping Avicennian Temperaments and the Tripartite Soul onto Contemporary Neurochemistry, QEEG and fMRI Evidence
This preprint introduces "Neurosina" - a comprehensive conceptual framework that bridges Avicennian philosophical psychology with contemporary cognitive neuroscience. The work presents systematic mappings between classical Islamic psychological concepts (four temperaments and tripartite soul) and modern neurobiological correlates using neurochemical, electrophysiological (QEEG), and neuroimaging (fMRI) evidence. Background:There exists a significant epistemological gap between classical metaphysical frameworks of consciousness, particularly Avicenna's sophisticated psychological models, and modern data-driven neuroscience. This work addresses this divide through rigorous conceptual synthesis. Primary Objectives:- Develop systematic mappings between Avicennian temperaments and neurobiological profiles- Establish "NeuroNafsology" as a model aligning the tripartite soul with hierarchical brain networks- Introduce the Avicennian Cognitive State Matrix (ACSM) for visualizing consciousness states- Create a foundation for culturally-informed neuroscience and personalized psychospiritual therapeutics Methodology: Systematic literature review and conceptual synthesis of 78 studies through structured database searching (PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science), rigorous screening (PRISMA guidelines), and argument-based synthesis. Key Contributions:Neuro-Temperamentology:Mapping of four Avicennian temperaments to specific neurochemical profiles, QEEG signatures, and fMRI network correlatesNeuroNafsology: Novel framework operationalizing the vegetative, animal, and rational souls as interacting neural hierarchiesACSM Model: Three-dimensional state space for consciousness (Soul-Tier Dominance × Neuroenergetic Intensity × Mystical Depth)Ethical Framework: Neuroethical guidelines for consciousness technologies rooted in Avicennian wisdom traditions Implications:This work opens new avenues for precision neuropsychiatry, consciousness engineering, culturally-responsive mental health interventions, and the ethical development of neurotechnologies. Version 1 includes the full conceptual paper (PDF). Supplementary materials, including the PRISMA flowchart and extraction table, will be uploaded in Version 2.
