Caves in the Skies: A sound cartography of Exoplanets
This paper presents a multidimensional sonification of exoplanetary data, developed in the Max/MSP environment and based on parameter mapping sonification (PMSon). Astrophysical parameters, such as surface temperature, habitability index, substellar–nadir delta, and ice fraction, were mapped onto perceivable and spatialized sonic properties, allowing for the exploration of differences between Cold, Hot, and potentially Habitable planets. The project integrates scientific data with timbral metaphors, generating an immersive soundscape that fosters both analytical insight and aesthetic engagement at the intersection between sound art and data representation. The methodology, aesthetic design, and future perspectives are discussed within the context of recent literature on sonification.
