A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF CORROSION INHIBITION EFFICIENCY ON MEDIUM CARBON STEEL USING ETHANOLIC EXTRACTS OF FICUS EXASPERATA AND ANANAS COMOSUS

A comparative analysis of corrosion inhibition efficiency (IE%) on medium carbon steel using ethanolic extracts of Ficus exasperata (F.E.) and Ananas comosus (A.C.) was studied. Techniques used in the study include weight loss measurement and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The behavior of medium carbon steel in an environment of 1 M and 2 M H2SO4 under the effects of solution temperature, immersion time and concentration of extracts was determined. The results of the study showed that the inhibition ef environments ranged from 74.5% to 92.3%, with 92.3% being the highest IE. Percentage from samples ficiency (IE%) for the immersion time effect for both extracts in 1M and 2M H2SO4 in 1 M H2SO4 is with 100 mL of Ananas comosus at an immersion time of 30 days, showing that the IE increased with increasing concentration of inhibitor extract as well as with increasing immersion time, but decreased with increasing concentration of acidic medium. The SEM image of the medium carbon steel without inhibitors showed a damaged structure. In contrast, samples that were in 100 ml of inhibitor showed the best protective layer on the metal surface, protecting it from corrosion. The adsorption of the inhibitor molecules on the surface of medium carbon steel corresponded to the Langmuir isotherm and showed that the inhibitory effect of the extracts was due to the adsorption of active compounds on the surface of the metal.
