Synergizing technology and optics: Exploring the wonders of bioelectronics contact lenses

The convergence of electronics and optical science has enabled the development of bioelectronic contact lenses advanced wearable systems that extend beyond vision correction to include augmented reality (AR), real-time health monitoring, and wireless digital connectivity. This narrative review synthesizes interdisciplinary advances across bioengineering, ophthalmology, materials science, and wearable technology, drawing from peer-reviewed literature, patents, and clinical studies published over the past two decades. Five primary functional domains are examined: (1) micro-displays for AR overlays; (2) biosensors for continuous monitoring of biomarkers such as glucose and intraocular pressure; (3) user-adjustable optical features including focus and color modulation; (4) wireless communication modules for integration with mobile and telehealth platforms; and (5) biocompatible, breathable materials supporting ocular safety and extended wear. These innovations offer significant potential for vision augmentation, chronic disease management, and digital health interaction. Despite ongoing technical and regulatory challenges, bioelectronic lenses represent an emerging frontier in personalized healthcare, with prospective applications in telemedicine, geriatric monitoring, and point-of-care diagnostics.
