THE EFFECTS OF PLASTIC POLLUTION ON HAWKSBILL SEA TURTLES
This paper will discuss the effects of plastic pollution on Hawksbill sea turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata) and its effect on their health and survival. Overall, sea turtles face many challenges in their lives as a result of irresponsible human activities. This research paper aims to bring awareness to plastic pollution and its significant harm to sea turtles. Sea turtles experience two main occurrences with plastic pollution: ingestion and entanglement. Ingestion of plastic can cause harmful physical damage to the intestines, lead to blockages, or trick the turtles into feeling full when they are not. Additionally, entanglement can cause loss of limbs, impairment of movement to catch food, and drowning. However, numerous organizations are working to protect sea turtles from plastic pollution and the many other threats that come their way. Similarly, many other organizations and projects are working to decrease plastic pollution and spread awareness. Sea turtles have been around for over 100 million years and have outlived many mass extinctions, but they are struggling to endure the impacts of plastic pollution in their habitats. Unless there is a significant change, humanity will hold the responsibility for their extinction. It can be concluded that monumental conservation efforts are required to reverse the damage.
