THE SOCIAL IMPACT OF INDIGENOUS EDUCATION ON COMMUNAL TRANSFORMATION IN ESAN SOCIETY, NIGERIA

Iruekpen, a prominent community within Esan society, developed a distinctive indigenous education system long before the arrival of Christian missionaries and colonial authorities. This system was deeply valued by all members of the community and aimed at producing individuals who were skilled, honest, industrious, creative, and socially responsible. Through its educational practices, the community instilled patriotism, respect, communalism, innovation, and a strong sense of neighborliness, fostering peace, harmony, and self-reliance. This paper examines the social relevance of Iruekpen’s indigenous education as a catalyst for community development and transformation, highlighting how it equipped children with the knowledge, skills, and values necessary for effective participation in communal life. The study employs the historical method, drawing on both primary sources—such as oral traditions, documents, and field notes—and secondary sources, including scholarly articles, biographies, newspapers, and historical reconstructions. Findings indicate that the indigenous education system effectively minimized social vices such as laziness, unemployment, and corruption by preparing individuals for productive roles in their vocations and careers. The paper concludes by recommending the integration of value-based indigenous education into contemporary curricula at all levels and the active involvement of parents as role models, to foster holistic social and communal development
