ESG Strategic Transformation and Operational Efficiency: An Empirical Analysis of Chinese Listed Companies
This study investigates how corporate Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) strategic transformation influences operational efficiency in Chinese enterprises. Despite growing attention to ESG integration, empirical evidence linking ESG initiatives to concrete operational improvements remains limited, particularly in emerging markets. Using panel data from A-share listed companies on Shanghai and Shenzhen exchanges (2015-2022), we employ fixed-effects regression models with instrumental variables to address endogeneity concerns. Results demonstrate that ESG performance exhibits a significant positive correlation with operational efficiency metrics, including asset turnover ratio and return on assets. Companies with higher ESG ratings achieve approximately 8-12% improvement in operational efficiency relative to their lower-rated counterparts. The relationship is mediated by enhanced risk management capabilities, improved stakeholder trust, and innovation-driven process optimization. Effects are more pronounced in manufacturing and energy sectors, where environmental compliance pressures are substantial. Robustness checks using propensity score matching confirm consistency across model specifications. These findings suggest that ESG integration functions not merely as a compliance mechanism but as a strategic lever for sustainable value creation. Policy implications include the need for standardized disclosure frameworks and targeted incentives for ESG adoption in resource-intensive industries.
