Haben wir ein Recht auf Dummheit?

Abstract Do we have a right to stupidity? In the 30th aphorism of Nietzsche’s Twilight of the Idols , he describes a certain type of tired worker who seeks regeneration in the consumption of art and is thus invoking its right to stupidity. This article will examine two questions with regard to Nietzsche’s description of such an art designed for regenerative stupidity: (1) To what extent does the Nietzschean diagnosis made in the aphorism still apply today? (2) Do we (from Nietzsche’s perspective) have a right to stupidity in the first place? And, according to Nietzsche, what could be possible alternative forms of recreation that are not based on a mental “vacation” by engaging with art that exercises its right to stupidity?
