SAFETY AND CLINICAL IMPACT OF EGG WHITE PEPTIDE FORMULATIONS ENRICHED WITH DIETARY FIBER

Protein is a critical macronutrient for wound healing, immune system support, and the preservation of lean body mass in critically ill patients, who often experience elevated protein requirements due to catabolic stress. Eggs, particularly egg whites, are nutrient-dense and provide high-quality protein with an amino acid score of 100. Egg whites are increasingly recognized as functional foods with potential roles in disease prevention and wellness promotion. Enzymatic hydrolysis of egg white produces peptides that are rapidly absorbed and exhibit diverse physiological effects, including antibacterial, anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, ACE-inhibitory, and immunomodulatory properties. Despite these potential benefits, limited scientific evidence exists comparing egg white supplementation to conventional protein sources such as whey or casein in critically ill populations. This narrative review synthesizes current literature on the effects of egg white supplementation in critically ill patients, highlighting the pharmacological potential of egg white peptides. The review also identifies the need for further systematic reviews and interventional studies to establish the safety, efficacy, and clinical outcomes of egg white peptide supplementation in this context
