Smart Sensors and Their Role in Environmental Monitoring

Smart sensors are transforming how we observe and protect the environment. This paper explores their role in environmental monitoring, focusing on how they combine sensing, computation, and connectivity to deliver continuous real-time data on air, water, and soil quality. It reviews the design and applications of smart sensors, from IoT-based air quality networks that detect pollutants to water sensors measuring pH and turbidity, and soil sensors supporting precision agriculture. The integration of these sensors into Internet of Things (IoT) systems enables automated data collection, analysis, and decision-making for sustainable environmental management. The paper also discusses the challenges of calibration, power consumption, and data reliability, while highlighting advances such as machine learning and edge computing that improve sensor performance. By leveraging smart sensor networks, environmental agencies and communities can better monitor pollution, predict environmental changes, and take timely actions to protect ecosystems and human health.
