THE ROLE OF COGNITIVE LINGUISTICS IN STUDYING CONCEPTUAL METAPHORS
Abstract. Conceptual metaphor theory, introduced by Lakoff and Johnson (1980), has become one of the most influential frameworks in modern linguistics. It emphasizes that metaphors are not merely stylistic devices but fundamental mechanisms of human thought that shape how individuals perceive and interact with the world. This article examines the role of cognitive linguistics in studying conceptual metaphors, focusing on their functions, classification, and application in discourse analysis. The findings suggest that the study of conceptual metaphors provides insights into the cultural, psychological, and communicative aspects of language, making it an effective tool for linguistic research and English language teaching.
