ASSESSING THE IMPACT OF SOCIAL MEDIA AND FEDERAL POLICIES ON PEACEFUL COEXISTENCE IN NIGERIA

Social media has emerged as a transformative force affecting multiple aspects of society, influencing both positive and negative dimensions of peaceful coexistence. Governments worldwide, including Nigeria, have responded to these influences in various ways, particularly concerning the perceived adverse effects on social harmony. This paper explores the interplay between the Federal Government of Nigeria and social media in promoting or challenging peaceful coexistence. Using Public Sphere Theory as a framework, the study builds on prior research examining how Baptist pastors in Ibadan utilize social media for conflict resolution and fostering harmony within their congregations. It reviews existing literature on the history of social media in Nigeria and its societal impacts, focusing on implications for peace. The study highlights key interactions between government policies and social media use, offering recommendations for effective regulation. The paper concludes with a cautionary note to the Federal Government of Nigeria and other governments globally, emphasizing that regulation of social media should preserve its intended purpose without undermining freedom of expression or social engagement
