Recognizing and Preserving Indigenous Knowledge through DOIs and Open Metadata: Insights from DataCite — iPRES 2025 New Zealand
Mohamad Mostafa presented virtually at the iPRES – International Conference on Digital Preservation, held from 3–7 November 2025 in Wellington, New Zealand. His presentation, titled “Recognizing and Preserving Indigenous Knowledge through DOIs and Open Metadata: Insights from DataCite,” explored the role of DataCite DOIs and open metadata in safeguarding and promoting Indigenous knowledge within the global research ecosystem. During his talk, Mohamad highlighted how DataCite’s infrastructure and metadata schema can support the recognition, citation, and long-term preservation of Indigenous knowledge while aligning with the principles of equity and inclusivity. Mohamad also showcased the University of Wisconsin–Madison Repository: Neotoma Paleoecological Database, where they applied the Open to Collaborate Notice (one of the Local Contexts labels) as part of their rights metadata.
