Albania Towards European Standards: Health Technical Professionals, Education, and Integration Challenges

Objective: This study aims to analyze Albania’s progress in developing health technical professions and aligning vocational and higher education with European Union (EU) standards. It seeks to identify key challenges and policy needs for sustainable development in this sector. Methodology: The analysis is based on the latest data from the European Commission, INSTAT, the Ministry of Health and Social Protection, Eurostat, and the Albanian Nurses Association (2018–2024). Comparative analyses were conducted on education and healthcare indicators, including the number of technical health professionals, participation in higher education, and healthcare expenditures. Results are presented through tables and charts to highlight positive trends and ongoing challenges. Results: Data show a steady increase in students enrolled in health-related fields and technical vocational education, improvements in program accreditation, and harmonization with EU standards. However, regional disparities, healthcare workforce emigration, and relatively low levels of higher education remain significant challenges. Conclusion: Albania has made notable progress toward EU standards in healthcare and education. Sustainable development of the health technical workforce requires continued investment, policies to retain staff, and improved access to services. The findings provide a basis for education and healthcare policies aligned with EU standards.
