INFLUENCE OF SUPERVISION OF INSTRUCTION ON TEACHERS' JOB PERFORMANCE IN PRIVATE SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN ANAMBRA STATE

The study investigated the influence of supervision of instruction on teachers’ jobperformance in private secondary schools in Anambra State. Two research questionsguided the study and two hypotheses were tested at .05 level of significance. Adescriptive research design was adopted for this study. The population of the studycomprised 686 principals made up of 627 males and 59 females from the 686 privatesecondary schools in Anambra State. The sample for this study comprised 353respondents, comprising 319 males and 34 females, drawn using a proportionatestratified sampling technique. The researchers developed instrument titled ‘Influenceof Supervision of Instruction on Teachers’ Job Performance Questionnaire(ISITJPQ) was used for data collection. The instruments were subjected to facevalidation by three experts, comprising two in Education Management and one inMeasurement and Evaluation, all from the Department of Educational Foundationsin the Faculty of Education, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University,Igbariam campus. Content validation of the instrument was conducted using factoranalysis. Cronbach's Alpha was used to assess the instrument's internal consistency, yielding a coefficient of 0.80. Data collected were analyzed using mean and standarddeviation to answer the research questions and an independent t-test to test thehypotheses. The findings revealed that the classroom observation technique has apositive influence on teachers’ job performance in private secondary schools inAnambra State. It was also reported that there is no significant difference in the meanratings of male and female principals on the influence of clinical supervisiontechnique on teachers’ job performance in private secondary schools in AnambraState. Based on the findings, it was recommended, among others, that the PostPrimary School Service Commission should embark on regular supervisoryexercises to complement principals' classroom observation of teachers and improvetheir job performance.
