Demographic, clinical and microbiological profiles, and outcome of children with infective endocarditis requiring surgical intervention in acute phase: A case series
Infective endocarditis (IE) is associated with certain complications that can only be controlled with surgical intervention. This case series comprises 16 pediatric patients with IE who underwent surgical intervention during the acute phase, before completion of antibiotic therapy, at tertiary care pediatric heart institute in South India. Ten (62.5%) out of 16 cases had underlying congenital heart diseases. Blood cultures were positive in 12 (75%) cases. Valvular insufficiency was the predominant indication for surgical intervention, observed in 12 (75%) cases. Thirteen (81%) cases had uneventful recovery, while 2 (12.5%) cases expired during treatment. Early surgical intervention in acute phase was associated with favorable outcome in majority.
