A STUDY OF MULTILINGUALISM AS A FACILITATOR OF CROSS-BORDER COLLABORATION AND EXCHANGES: CASE STUDY OF EUROPEAN UNION

In an era of increasing globalization, effective cross-border collaboration remains a critical challenge due to linguistic and cultural barriers. This study investigates multilingualism as a strategic facilitator of international cooperation, addressing the research problem of how language diversity can be harnessed to enhance mutual understanding and collaborative efficiency across nations. The primary objectives are to examine the role of multilingual competencies in the European Union (EU), assess institutional mechanisms that support multilingual communication, and identify best practices for leveraging language skills in transnational governance. Using a qualitative case study methodology, the research draws on official EU documents, scholarly literature, and thematic analysis of multilingual practices within EU institutions. Findings reveal that multilingualism significantly improves democratic participation, policy coordination, and intercultural engagement. It also enhances access to broader knowledge networks and supports inclusive governance. The study recommends sustained investment in multilingual education, digital translation tools, and inclusive language policies to strengthen cross-border collaboration within and beyond the EU.
