Challenges and Opportunities of Integrating Yoruba Language as a Medium of Instruction in Nigerian Primary School Classes
The integration of Yoruba as a medium of instruction in Nigerian primary school classrooms presents both significant challenges and opportunities. This study explores the potential of Yoruba, one of Nigeria’s major indigenous languages, in enhancing educational outcomes for primary school students. One of the primary challenges lies in the existing dominance of English as the primary language of instruction, which often creates a linguistic divide and limits the full cognitive and academic development of students who are more familiar with indigenous languages. Furthermore, there is a lack of trained teachers proficient in Yoruba for academic purposes, which hinders the effective delivery of curriculum content in the language. However, the use of Yoruba as a medium of instruction holds the potential to foster better understanding and engagement among students, promote cultural preservation, and enhance literacy and cognitive development. The study also identifies the opportunity for curriculum reforms that incorporate Yoruba language and culture, alongside improved teacher training programs. Key stakeholders, including policymakers, educators, and parents, need to collaborate to address the challenges and optimize the opportunities for a more inclusive and culturally relevant educational system. Overall, integrating Yoruba as a medium of instruction in Nigerian primary schools could contribute to a more equitable and contextually meaningful educational experience.
